Sam joined George Hay in September 2020, as a Trainee Accountant based in Huntingdon, and he will be studying towards his level 3 AAT qualification, whilst supporting the accounts team.
Q1. What attracted you to a career in accountancy with George Hay, after teaching for a number of years?
Achieving a better work life balance was a major reason for leaving teaching and school life. Accountancy really appealed as an opportunity to continue using Maths daily, as well as holding a position with responsibility and building relationships with people with a goal to helping them succeed.
Q2. What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Creative, Sporty & Calm.
Q3. What would your ideal three course meal be?
Can I have a Roast Dinner for every course?! If so, that would definitely be my ideal three course meal.
Q4. Your profile tells us you enjoy sitcoms and panel shows, but which are your favourite viewing?
Of all my favourites, I still end up watching the US Office again and again, so I’d have to say that.
Q5. Your specialist subject on Mastermind would be…
Unfortunately, I’m not sure I’d be very good on Mastermind! I think I’d be OK at General Knowledge, but not so sure about a specialist topic…
Q6. As restrictions ease, what are you looking forward to post-pandemic?
Normality! Spending time with family and friends again – hopefully, Katie and I will be able to have some sort of wedding reception/celebration in the not-too-distant future too!
Q7. For you, what has been the best thing about working full time as part of the George Hay team, alongside your studies?
To be able to learn from colleagues who have so much experience, but who have also been in exactly the same position as me and understand the level I am at.
Q8. With your studies underway, what do you hope to achieve in the coming 12 months and what elements of your training have been most interesting so far?
I have found Accounts Production to be the most interesting so far, but I have enjoyed the opportunity to do some more bookkeeping and VAT returns recently. In the coming 12 months, I hope to grow in confidence and be more self-sufficient!
Q9. We also know, from your profile, that you’re into sport! If you could interview any sportsman, who would you choose?
Not an easy decision… ex-Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger would be amazing!
